The History of Bleaklow

The land at Bleaklow Farm has passed through many generations since the early 1800’s, where it began life as a house and a small holding. Previously known as a working farm, this land had a collection of stables that were used for cattle and horses, central barns, and milking parlours. It was last known to be home to the Wagers family, who farmed the land for many years, creating many memories along the hillside. Over the years this farmland has grown organically, creating the space for a working farm, leaving this historic collection of buildings. There are masses of history in the structure of Bleaklow’s walls, which we wanted to preserve as much as possible, when renovating the property.

Interested in making this idyllic land our own, we purchased the 100-acre plot of land in early 2012, with a vision, an idea which was going to make a change for the better. We were so excited to get started on this development, so ideas were set in place.

Navigating the Landscape

Of course, bringing this vision to life was no simple task, with planning and building control, we needed to make sure that we completed this development to a high standard. As with any property development, there were a variety of challenges to overcome. One of the most significant obstacles was working with the unique landscape of the Peak District. We were determined to preserve the area’s natural beauty, which meant that through evaluation was necessary. At Beyond Venues we were stunned by the amazing architecture that that’s house held and wanted to make sure we kept the beautiful conditions and the style of the property.

Working in collaboration with The Peak District National Park we wanted to understand the environment, protect the areas heritage and landscape, and overall, create the most fitting holiday home for the land. This meant working hard and collaborating with various people to make sure we enhance whilst still retaining Bleaklow’s original grounds. 

Creating Something Special

The story of this property began with a simple, yet ambitious vision: to create a living space that would not only provide comfort and luxury but would also allow its guests to connect with the spectacular environment of the Peak District. 

Due to the heritage of the land we desired to be respectful and create something new but keep the original buildings, for example, the old Cowshed, now known as The Parlor, has its original features and structures, such as the exposed brick walls and vaulted ceilings. From the beginning, our aim was to build more than just a house – we hoped to create a community, a space where people could truly live in harmony with nature while enjoying the benefits of modern living. 

The team at Beyond Venues aimed highly, to extinguish the beauty of the Peak District alongside this beautiful house. Surrounded by rolling hills and panoramic views, filled with life, from swallow nests to sheep that greet you at the fence, this felt like the perfect canvas for a project that would blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings.

We carefully selected features that reflected the region’s beauty and heritage, such as the bare limestone walls and exposed traditional wooden beams, while still incorporating contemporary elements; the expansive glass doors and windows selected to create a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing you to take a breathtaking view of the hills of the White Peak. 

Each room was carefully designed to maximize space, light, and comfort, offering the perfect environment for families and professionals.
